Spectrum Refarmation for IMT bands:

The ITU has identified a number of frequency bands for implementation of IMT. Initially, in WRC-92, ITU identified 230 MHz of spectrum bandwidth for IMT-2000 as noted at S. No. ‘iv’ & ‘v’ of the Table-I below. With the advancement in the technologies and the world new requirement of additional bandwidth for new systems/ services, additional frequency bands were identified in subsequent World Radio Conference of the ITU. In WRC-07, the IMT-2000 was redefined and now the terminology International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT) which also includes the IMT-2000 and IMT-Advance for which the frequency bands have been identified as reflected in the Table-I below:

ITU Identified IMT Bands

The ITU Recommendation M.1036-3 provides for frequency arrangements for the IMT-2000 bands whereas, the band arrangement for the digital dividend band in the 700 MHz and 800 MHz have also separately been framed.

In the view of current assignments and available options, the 2.6 GHz and 800 MHz bands could be suitable options for IMT deployment in Pakistan whereas; other options like 700 MHz and 2.3 GHz bands are also being considered. Though, these bands are under usage of some operators/ users, however these bands can be made available through the refarmation/ redeployment mechanism.
